This is not often explicit in Jung’s writing, as for instance in his argument that Westerners must take a different approach from “Easterners” to the same goal, and therefore utilize different techniques. That is the argument that “this is how it is for us;” and it is an undercurrent in Jung’s analyses which serves to use Buddhism as a vehicle for the validation of Depth Psychology, rather than an open investigation of their mutual limitations and strengths. This sharp distinction between “East” and ‘West” appears to serve Jung both in his argument that Buddhism is by and large not for Europeans (whereas by inference, Depth Psychology is) and in allowing his sweeping generalizations about the radically “introverted East” which Said has criticized as Orientalism. It is clearer in his apparent disinterest in actually investigating his source materials at any length. As Jungian analyst J. M. Spiegleman points out in a panel discussion, “Jung’s position on this is, which I think is subject to real criticism. . . was that he refused. . . for example he went to India and wouldn’t even talk to those masters because he was trying to protect his own alchemy. He took Western alchemy to India, he talked a little bit, but he was trying to protect that treasure. So he could have talked to some pretty big people, which how great for us all if he would have done that, but he didn’t.” (Vreeland, 1996). We have in addition Jung’s own assertion that “we do not assume that the mind is a metaphysical entity or that there is any connexion between an individual mind and a hypothetical Universal Mind. Our psychology is, therefore, a science of mere phenomena without any metaphysical implications.” (Evans-Wentz, 1954)

In the context of his discussion of Zen, this essentially Judaeo-Christian notion is introduced in his comment on the famous koan “Joshu’s Mu” (or “Wu” here). In appreciating the fact that “Nature herself” answers the monk’s question “Does a dog have Buddha nature?” with Joshu’s answer of “Mu!” Jung goes on to introduce a very non-Buddhist interpretation. He reads “wu” as “wu-wu” (as in bow-wow) and comments “. . . how much wisdom there is in the Master’s “Wu,” the answer to the question about the Buddha-nature of the dog! One must always bear in mind, however, that there are a great many people who cannot distinguish between a metaphysical joke and nonsense. . . “ (1992). This would unfortunately seem to include Jung himself.

Generally speaking, the language of instruction at the University of
Copenhagen is Danish but in the Afdelingen for Filosofi (Department of
Philosophy) you also had to be fluent in english and german. I was
surprised old greek and latin whee not included as they were in the 1950ies.

Which means you read a text in the ursprache and discuss it in that
language.
Well many of us faked it with Kant using a parallel text with danish
or english and a german dictionary and my own german is very much of the
passive variety in the early stage of aquiring another language
partially understanding but neither speaking nor writing, in fact
danish is a kind of low german with many words shared with high german
but a simpler modernised grammar.

Introduction

Since 1998, there have been more than 30,000 people who commit suicide annually, and the phenomenon has become a social problem in Japan.

The number used to be more or less 20,000 before that. The current situation is quite alarming when compared to other countries. For this reason, suicide prevention is a big issue in the field of Health and Medical Services.

There are three preventive ways against suicide.

The first prevention is to enrich and empower each individual's mental health. In addition, social values and norms in relation to suicide have to be changed. However, the subject is beyond the discourse here.

The second prevention is to find the symptoms of suicide among those who are on the high-risk level and intervene. Currently, a various studies are taking place about the issue.

The third prevention is focused on patients' mental health and effective way of Intervention in order to treat patients who have impeding suicide-wishes or hold some unsuccessful suicide records. In the third suicide prevention, medical treatment takes a considerable part to take care of the needy, more than health or education or sociology or such field of professional services.

The third preventive method is a combination of medical treatment and revitalization of individual strengths. Expectations for medical treatment are quite high, especially, for the psychiatric treatments are enormous. In fact, the expectation is so great that one may wonder about the capability of mental healthcare to do the task. At the same time, such expectations put huge pressures on the medical profession, and as a result, there has been a tendency to over treat their patients among the medical professionals, including psychiatrists.

Traditionally, suicides such as double suicide and self-immolation were seen as a positive act in Japan. Once, suicide caused by mental disorders used to be diagnosed as pathological death, but no longer so when suicide prevention is concerned.

Suicide is generally considered as exogenous death, and it is an indisputable fact.

On the other hand, there ought to be alternative aspects toward suicide as far as preventive treatments are discussed. A death by suicide can be a pathological death or a natural death. Perhaps, we should reconsider the significance of suicide, and search for the possibilities of alternative views to recognize part of suicide as a natural death. It is not cutting off the people who need medical treatment for their mental health, nor is it a defeat for medical professionals who are unable to save their patients. Rather, it will be a positive way to prevent the over treatment of suicidal patients.

1. Suicide on the psychiatric scene

In the strict sense, suicide is self-killing. However, in clinical psychiatry, we tend to take a wide view over the suicide issue. We consider it a suicide if someone dies while having a death wish. We have no clear definition for this type of death, though. Of course, there are people against this point of view. I consider the idea of "self-dying" as a useful tool to discuss the existence of suicide caused by other reasons except exogenous death. "Self-dying" wishers refuse medical treatments while knowing full well that their illness is treatable and even curable. There are cases of "para-suicide" among the persons who are not so serious or in the state of ambivalence toward death, and there is a sort of accidental suicide, as well. It is said that many suicides are connected to mental disorders. Some studies report that in about 90 percent of cases, the individuals concerned previously suffered from depression and/or drug dependency.

For this matter, there is a wide bias in our society telling that healthy people and people in the state of well being do not commit suicide, and that suicide-wish is a treatable disease. If the disease is cured, the person can be free from the thought of self-killing. This view is focused on each individual's living condition rather than death itself.

When a suicide is accomplished, people who are left behind and the medical professionals feel themselves remorse and powerless for being unable to prevent the suicide. By the way, what is the purpose of treating patients who have death wish? Should the medical treatment to be focused on the person's self-killing thoughts or on the individual's life per se?

Technically, it is possible to keep a person physically alive by medical treatment. Unfortunately, it is a different story whether the individual is actively living or not. Sometimes, death can be a welcome thought than a miserable existence for the unfortunates.

If life is something that can be changeable by the hand of human being, does the medical profession have the right to juggle human life? Or is the medical treatment to be considered same as technology that can save or lose human lives? Many issues such as above concerning suicide prevention have to be carefully studied.

There is another consideration over the subject of suicide prevention. Is it possible to foresee and prevent suicide? In other words, can anybody predict the action of other people easily? Is suicide can be manageable like traffic accidents? Surely, we can manage to avoid many traffic accidents if the condition of cars and roads are improved.

I also wonder if the prevention of suicide is just the matter of technical issue same as traffic accident prevention. Suppose, if it is so, people may think that the unsuccessful treatment on a suicidal patient is a result of failure caused by the psychiatrist's inability to handle it? Public opinions seem to take side with the belief connecting a successful prevention and a capable psychiatrist. What the use of psychiatrists anyway, if they cannot give their patients hopes and dreams to live for, and on the way, to prevent suicides? Is it also critical if the treatment does not involve empowerment of each individual patient? And finally, is the medical profession alone holding the responsibilities of reducing individual pain suffered by the suicidal patients?

2 Case Presentations
"Case 1: A 70-year-old male, Schizophrenia"
Onset of the disorder is when he was about 20 years old. He tried unsuccessful suicide attempts several times in order to escape from the symptoms of delusional persecution. He was taken to the hospital against his will each time he tried. Finally, he had to stay in the hospital forever.

While hospitalized, he became accustomed to live in the delusional world. He invented an immortality machine and believed that he would live an eternal life. He was often annoyed by the invented Russian spy who wanted his immortality machine.

He looked like a gentleman and was able to manage everyday life. His behaviors were mild, and he built a good rapport with people around. Through the hospitalization, he kept his decisional capacity intact. Then, he had a tumor and the result of CT scan found renal cancer affecting his body. Naturally, a surgical operation was recommended, but he refused it while understanding well his condition was serious enough to be fatal.

"I thought I was immortal" "I believed I could not die" "Now I want to die as a whole person with a dignity, not as a mentally disabled" with these last words several months later, he welcomed his death in the Internal Department of the hospital.

"Case 2: A 60-year-old female, Schizophrenia"
Onset of her disorder is when she was at the age of about 20. She suffered from delusion of persecution and auditory hallucination. As a result, she tried to commit suicide. After repeating the process of in and out of the hospital because of her persisting suicidal wishes, she was in full remission when she was approaching 40. She worked as a cleaning lady at the hospital for 20 years after that. She retired at 58 and lived in a group home and went to the daycare center in the Psychiatric Department. She was introvert, and loved music and drawing. She had a few friends but was never isolated.

She sometimes talked about her anxiety toward reduced income after retirement, and was a little nervous of spending plentiful time without work or concerned about life in general at the old age. However, she did not seem to be acting negatively, nor was expressed.

Nevertheless, one afternoon, she succeeded to commit suicide, and her body was found under the bridge. The day, she was absent from the session at the daycare center without any notice, but the staff and the members did not find it unusual.

Her will, a bankbook, a photo for her funeral were found in her room. It was a well-planned suicide commitment prepared several days in advance.

3 Discussion
Both cases above are related to Schizophrenia. In the case 1, the man was an inpatient in the state of incomplete remission. The man died from his illness, cancer, therefore, his death was diagnosed as pathological death. He knew he would be dead unless he received a surgical operation, but his refusal of accepting the medical treatment prompted his death.

This can be interpreted as a form of suicide or even dying by himself intentionally. A natural death occurred while the person did not want to live but die can be understood as a suicidal death.

He tried to commit suicide several times in the early stage of his disorder, and his life was saved by the medical treatment. After that, everyday living made him feel like immortal and inhuman, and he believed that his right to die was violated, and instead, he was given the eternal life. It encouraged him building up the delusional world to rationalize his thoughts.

While living, he was dying slowly and in the state of iatrogenic Cotard syndrome. When he realized that he was mortal and human, he chose death happily and had a satisfied self-dying. In that sense, the death can be seen as a natural death for him.

Perhaps, it was possible to keep him alive by forcing an operation to treat his cancer, but it was doubtful if the method work to save his soul and give him the purpose to live. Even the surgical operation was successful, there might still be a possibility he would have tried to kill himself when he was recovered from the effect of anesthesia.

In Case 2, the woman had a mental disorder but she was capable of living and kept her competency at the time of suicide. She expressed some anxiety about old age, but her living condition was not so bad because of the income from savings and social security. She went to the daycare center willingly. She went there when she was up to it, never forced. She lived alone but was not socially isolated, either.

Was it her subtle way to inform others about her intention to die by stating her anxiety toward old age? Could anyone perceive it as a clear indicator of suicidal attempt when she was absent from the daycare center? Suppose, someone was able to catch the sign of her death wish and asked her about it, she could simply deny and probably would try again.

At least, it would have been almost impossible to diagnose her condition as suicidal and force a medical treatment on her. And again, if something has done to keep her alive against her wish, it would be a meaningless life for her. What better way could the medical treatment have done? Any medical intervention at this point might be taken as an overtreatment.

It will be difficult and insignificant to look for something in common between the case 1 and the case 2, except that the man and the woman were in their moratorium for death. In both cases, the individuals could be said having no purpose to live and they wanted to die. They were in the preparatory stage for death.

They could not wait for their time to die naturally. Death was in the far a way and coming too slowly for their way of thinking. The woman brought her death in silence and the man grabbed the opportunity to die.

If I were the medical doctor or a psychiatrist in charge, I would hesitate to give the man and the woman some medical treatment because it could not give them any hope to continue their lives willingly. I believe that in the world of medicine, there is certain form of death performed by oneself that any medical treatment would fail to save. However, the current social norms toward medicalization of suicide prevention with people suffering from mental disorders demand that they should force treatments on the unwilling persons who have suicidal wishes.

Unfortunately, staying alive does not the same thing as living actively. Without understanding the difference, forced medical treatment may only produce a disastrous result on the patients' lives. And their living may become a bottomless iatrogenic infinite moratorium for death. The death in the two cases had taken the form of pathological death and suicide. On the other hand, if their death could be accepted as a natural death, by introducing a double orientation, it might avoid falling into the abyss of discrepancy between life and death.

The concept of suicide, part of it, as being taken a sort of natural death may allow psychotic persons to live or die at their free will, and therefore, not to drive them into a corner by forcing them into unwanted medical treatment. Needless to say, the concept does not mean to abandon those unfortunates who may want to have medical treatments to resist their suicidal impulse.

4. Conclusion
The manner of suicide will be divided into two ways: the direct way and the indirect way of killing oneself. No need to mention, but the direct way is intentional killing by oneself. On the contrary, the indirect way welcomes death that can be avoided if the certain medical or other wise interventions are applied. In a sense, indirect suicide can be a natural death for the individual who preferred to die to live. It is a form of dying by oneself, and also quite similar to the form of natural death. If the person was suffering from mental disorders, it could be perceived as a pathological death, as well.

Being alive is not the same as living a full active life. Forced medical treatment on the patients can certainly keep the persons physically alive, but it may only torment them if it cannot give them the reason and the purpose to live for, especially, with those who suffer from mental disorders and think seriously about death. Unnecessary medical over treatment will only prolong patient's life, and moreover, increase unnecessary sufferings onto the individual. In that case, life will be like an eternal moratorium for death without an exit, and the feeling of hopelessness and despair may overwhelm them.

Regrettably, the current medical treatment system does not have ability to treat suicidal persons with its full capacity. On the contrary, there is a tendency in the Japanese society to apply medical treatment to prevent suicide. In this atmosphere, medical care for the suicidal patients is going to be over treatment for the sake of just keeping them alive, physically anyway.

Finally, I would like to point out the possibility if the society can accept "dying by oneself" as part of natural death, such tragedies can be avoidable.

Tip 1 Abdominal Breath
Awareness – is on the quality of breath, relaxing the body, and rise and fall of abdomen.

Benefit - Breath into your belly, allow it to expand gently when you inhale and relax as you exhale. This will bring the energy deeper into your being and oxygen into the bottom of your lungs.

The technique

1. Abdominal breathing is best done lying on your back flat on the ground. Place one hand on the abdomen. The ideal spot to place the hand is over the belly button.

2. Now take a deep, slow breath using as much of the lower part of your belly as possible. As you inhale, feel the abdomen rising and expanding into your hand and as you exhale feel the abdomen lower. Really feel your hand rise and fall as you breathe. Don't look at your belly; keep your head flat on the ground, just try and feel the motion.

3. Continue this practice for a minute or so.

Tip 2 Full Yogic Breath
Awareness – is on the quality of breathing, relaxing the body and feeling the various parts of the belly, ribs and chest rise and fall.

Benefit – Practise this type of breathing on a regular basis and it will energise your whole being and it can also be used to relax in times when feeling agitated.

The technique

1. Lie flat on the ground or sit comfortably in a cross-legged position. Place cushions under the buttocks if needed, the important thing is to be relaxed and comfortable, with the spine as straight as possible. If the back is very uncomfortable, try sitting against a wall.

2. Place one hand on the abdomen and the other on the chest to feel them rising and lowering as you breath.

3. Inhale slowly and deeply, feeling the abdomen expand as you inhale. Once the stomach is reasonably full, continue to inhale through the ribcage, and finally feel the air filling the upper chest.

4. Pause for just a moment and then begin your exhalation. As you exhale, feel your chest sink and relax first, then let all the breath out of the body until none is left, just a feeling of emptiness, with no strain at the bottom, just quiet. Pause for just a moment, enjoy that stillness and quiet and wait for the in breath to arrive once more; and so the journey of breath continues.

5. Feel each part of the body expand and contract as you inhale and exhale. Always be relaxed, always keep your breathing at a steady pace and always stay completely aware on each breath and pause. It is so easy for the mind to wander off and you really won't experience the true benefits if you don’t completely absorb yourself with the breath.

Tip 3 Ujjayi Breath
Awareness - is on the throat, the sound and the lengthening of breath.

Benefit – Ujjayi breathing helps to calm the nervous system and focus the mind as well as heat the body within.

The technique

1. Sit comfortably with a straight spine. Begin breathing deeply through the nostrils. Concentrate only on the inhalation and exhalation.

2. As your awareness becomes attached to the breathing, transfer your focus from the nostrils to the throat. Now imagine that your breath is being drawn in and out of the throat, as if the breath is taking place through a small hole in the throat.

3. As the breathing becomes slower and deeper, release the chin into the chest slightly - this closes the glottis (the glottis is the flap of skin above the windpipe which helps to stop food from going down the windpipe). This produces a gentle hissing or snoring sound, which should be smooth and steady as you breathe.

4. Both inhalation and exhalation should be long, deep and controlled.

5. Practise Full Yogic Breathing while you concentrate on the sound in the throat produced by the breath. The sound shouldn't be too loud. It should be heard just by the person doing it and not another person unless they are sitting close.

6. Continue for up to 10 minutes, however, beginners may want to do shorter sittings until you feel comfortable with the technique.

Tip 4 Alternate Nostril Breathing
Awareness – is on the rhythm and quality of the breath

Benefit – Calms the mind and body and regulates the breathing tempo and brings equilibrium to the entire system. It can also help if you have trouble sleeping.

Have you ever noticed that you are generally able to breathe more easily through one nostril than the other? Or that you may be completely blocked up on one side, and then twenty minutes later it is the other nostril that is blocked? None of this should surprise us. The breath alternates between the right and left nostril about every 90 minutes in a healthy person. If you are unable to breathe through one nostril for over two hours it could be a sign of impending illness.

The Hand Position

Take your left hand and place it on the left knee. Take your right hand and make a fist and then open the thumb and two end fingers straight. Maintain this hand position throughout, and you should always close the right nostril with the right thumb and the left nostril with the ring finger throughout.

The technique

Lift your hand position to your face and take a deep, slow inhalation,

Close the right nostril with the right thumb and exhale slowly...

1. Inhale through the left nostril a smooth and steady breath.

2. When you have completed a full inhalation, close the left nostril with your ring finger. Remove the thumb to open the right nostril.

3. Exhale through the right nostril a smooth and steady breath.

4. When you have a completed a full exhalation, inhale through the right nostril a smooth and steady breath.

5. When you have completed a full inhalation, close the right nostril with your thumb. Remove the ring finger to open the left nostril.

6. Exhale through the left nostril a smooth and steady breath

7. This is one complete round. Repeat up to 10-12 times.

Tip 5 Nada Yoga – the yoga of sound
Awareness – is on the sound, its vibration and length and tone.

Benefit – Sounds create vibrations and these vibrations then sift through the energy body releasing any blockages and creating flow again to our being. The focus of sound helps concentrate and calm the mind, which then has a positive knock-on effect to the body. Sound is also very uplifting and can change moods.

Yoga uses chanting in order to create vibratory changes in your state of consciousness. Think of yourself as a radio with the chanting adjusting the frequency to find the clearest station. That clear station is a higher state of consciousness.

The technique

Toning

Aaahhhhh

Inhale deeply and then simply make the sound 'Aaahhhhh' as you exhale. Try to be aware of where the sound is vibrating within your body and then direct it down towards the pelvis. Focus on that vibration for the duration of the exhalation. Inhale and repeat two more times.

Ooooouuu

Inhale deeply and then make the sound 'Ooouuuuu' as you exhale. This time the sound should vibrate around the heart area. Focus on that vibration for the duration of the exhalation. Inhale and repeat two more times.

Mmmmm

Finally, inhale deeply and make the sound 'Mmmmmmm' as you exhale. You can make this sound with your lips sealed. The vibration should resonate most powerfully in the area of the throat and up towards your third eye centre, situated between the eyebrows. Focus on that vibration for the duration of the exhalation. Inhale and repeat two more times.

Traffic light continual sound

Now bring the tones together in one breath.

Inhale and let the breath out in a 'Aaahhhhooouuuuuummmmmmmmmmmm'. Allow the 'M' to vibrate until the end of your exhalation. Focus on the sound, on the vibration, and on lengthening the exhalation. Take a deep inhalation and try again at least another two more times.

Tip 6 Nada Yoga – the yoga of Sound

Awareness – is on the sound, its vibration and length and tone.

Benefit – Humming helps to reduce anxiety and make you feel calm; it can also give you lots more energy.

The technique

Make a Mmmmmmmm sound for a long as comfortable then take a long breath and begin again. Do this at least 12 times and see what happens!
Tip 7 Lion
Awareness – This isn't a vocal sound: just exhale for long as long as you can, and no baby lions - go for it!

Benefit – Releases aggression; tones the face and neck; relieves sore throats.

The technique

Assume a comfortable kneeling position with the buttocks resting on the heels. Keep the back straight.

1. Place your hands on your knees and straighten the body.

2. Inhale and scrunch you face up - imagine you have just tasted something bitter.

3. Now all at once: as you exhale through your mouth, stick your tongue out (try and touch your chin with your tongue) and look up with wide eyes. Your body should come slightly forward, the hands should flex, and all that air should pour out in a big soundless roar.

Repeat 3-6 times.

when I was really depressed in 1999, I used the samaritans and phoned them in the night,
or on the way back from the hospital in Solihull, where my mother wanted to commit suicide, I used to drop in and ask for a coffee, and chat away until I felt better.
I also use alcohol but only at night-- which makes me fat - been dry for months but recently had a lapse and put on half a stone
- dry again now
and I made some friends too, who supported me in the bar at The George - emotionally not literally
so we phone each other if we want an ear

the basic problem of commiting suicide is you won't be around to see the effect on the people you leave behind.

My first wife, a fine oboist, and my 91 year old mother both threatened suicide.

The effect on me was to break my first marriage because in order to preserve my own sanity I walked out.
My first wife was clinically depressed but refused treatment for three years. Her depression appeared as unconsolable tears at on waking at 4:00 am or as anger.

There are two basic causes of depression a chemical imbalance in your brain or unhappy circumstances in your life.

So the solution to suicidal thoughts is first to talk about them to someone who is a stranger, and who will make no demands on you, but just listen and ask you neutral questions to help you get sorted in the way you want to.

This is called non-directive counselling

This is a short term solution until you are ready to seek professional help or your black mood lifts.

Obviously ending your life is a human right in a world of free choice.

Too bad it is a waste of all the food you ate or the education you got, and it will break the hearts of those who love you.

These levels might be compared to the initiations of magical systems. While the stages appear dissimilar to those of Crowley's Ordo Templi Orientis, it is worth noting that both systems consist of stages, that both have secret levels and that both are numbered with Roman numerals.
Hubbard also shared with Crowley a numbering system which begins at 0 rather than 1.

By "Operating Thetan", Hubbard meant an individual or "thetan" able to "operate" freely from the physical body, able to cause effects at a distance by will alone In Hubbard's words "a thetan exterior who can have but doesn't have to have a body in order to control or operate thought, life, matter, energy, space and time" (051). Hubbard used the term "intention" rather than "will" (052), but the goal of Scientology is clearly the same as that of the Crowley system. The Scientologist wishes to be able to control events and the minds of others by intention. This seems to be exactly what Crowley called "thelema". In a 1952 lecture, Hubbard recommended a book which he called "The Master Therion" (053). This was in fact one of Crowley's "magical" names. I have been advised by an officer of one of the Ordo Templi Orientis groups that the reference is most likely to Crowley's magnum opus Magick in Theory and Practice. In that work, Crowley gave this definition "Magick is the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will" (054). So the aim of both Crowley and Hubbard seems to have been the same.

It is often the case with Hubbard's work that he has simply taken other ideas and dressed them up in new expressions. Careful study shows that Dianetics is largely a rewording of existing work. The original language of Dianetics included such words as "operator", "reverie" and "regression" common to hypnotic practitioners at the time.

On leaving Scientology, most people cannot see that the "body thetans" of Operating Thetan levels three to seven are in fact the demons of Christian belief.

The "OT levels" are factually the most expensive form of exorcism known to man. Unfortunately, such beliefs and practices can have a severe effect upon practitioners, who take Hubbard's warnings to heart and come to believe themselves multiple personalities. I have been called in to help several times in such instances.

Another former Sea Organization member affidavited a meeting in the 1970s with an old man whose description fitted Hubbard's. She claimed to have been taken to the top floor of a Scientology building by high-ranking officials and left there with this man, who performed the sexual act with her, but very slowly (104). Indeed, in the way advocated by Crowley and called karezzo. No outside witness has corroborated this statement.

In conclusion, I believe that Hubbard was a classic psychopath. Some trauma in infancy separated him from the world and made him untrusting of other people. This developed into a paranoia, a need to control others.

Evidence from the last 20 years of work in cognitive psychology indicate that we use the letters within a word to recognize a word. Many typographers and other text enthusiasts I’ve met insist that words are recognized by the outline made around the word shape. Some have used the term bouma as a synonym for word shape, though I was unfamiliar with the term. The term bouma appears in Paul Saenger’s 1997 book Space Between Words: The Origins of Silent Reading. There I learned to my chagrin that we recognize words from their word shape and that “Modern psychologists call this image the ‘Bouma shape.’”

This paper is written from the perspective of a reading psychologist. The data from dozens of experiments all come from peer reviewed journals where the experiments are well specified so that anyone could reproduce the experiment and expect to achieve the same result. This paper was originally presented as a talk at the ATypI conference in Vancouver in September, 2003.

The goal of this paper is to review the history of why psychologists moved from a word shape model of word recognition to a letter recognition model, and to help others to come to the same conclusion. This paper will cover many topics in relatively few pages. Along the way I will present experiments and models that I couldn’t hope to cover completely without boring the reader. If you want more details on an experiment, all of the references are at the end of the paper as well as suggested readings for those interested in more information on some topics. What is fair use?

There are no hard and fast rules for fair use (and anyone who tells you that a set number of words or percentage of a work is "fair" is talking about guidelines, not the law). The Copyright Act sets out four factors for courts to look at (17 U.S.C. § 107):

The purpose and character of the use.
Transformative uses are favored over mere copying. Non-commercial uses are also more likely fair.

The nature of the copyrighted work. Is the original factual in nature or fiction?
Published or unpublished?
Creative and unpublished works get more protection under copyright, while using factual material is more often fair use.

The amount and substantiality of the portion used.
Copying nearly all of a work, or copying its "heart" is less likely to be fair.
The effect on the market or potential market. This factor is often held to be the most important in the analysis, and it applies even if the original is given away for free.

If you use the copied work in a way that substitutes for the original in the market, it's unlikely to be a fair use; uses that serve a different audience or purpose are more likely fair.

Linking to the original may also help to diminish the substitution effect. Note that criticism or parody that has the side effect of reducing a market may be fair because of its transformative character.

In other words, if your criticism of a product is so powerful that people stop buying the product, that doesn't count as having an "effect on the market for the work" under copyright law.

Can somebody please identify this majestic home.
My grandfather was a member of the NZ Forestry Group which stayed some time in England during 1941/1942.
My grandad says that when they arrived at this 'place' (see photograph) they were camped out in the stables. It was with great relief when one day the troops left the stables for the comfort of this grand stately home. I don't know what the NZ Forestry Group was doing or did in England. All I know was they were there. I believe the troop ship carried the group from Bombay India to Glasgow. My grandad had an old English map and he has marked with a cross places he stayed at. The places range from Carlisle to Torquay.
Does anyone recognise it?

Rupert Brooke: "Rupert Brooke was born in Rugby, Warwickshire, where his father taught classics and was a housemaster at Rugby School. In his childhood Brooke immersed himself in English poetry and twice won the school poetry prize. In 1906 he went to King's college, Cambridge, and became friends with G.E. Moore, Lytton Strachey, Maynard Keynes, Roger Fry, and Leonard Fry, members of the future Bloomsbury Group. In 1910 Brooke's father died suddenly, and Brooke was for a short time in Rugby a deputy housemaster. Thereafter Brooke lived on an allowance from his mother. In 1911 he worked on a thesis on the playwright John Webster and the Elizabethan drama, and travelled in Germany and Italy. In England he was a leader of a group of young 'Neo-pagans', who slept outdoors, embraced a religion of nature, and swam naked - among others Virginia Woolf joined the swimmers in Grantchester. However, sex was something that was not part of the fun - 'We don't copulate without marriage, but we do meet in cafes, talk on buses, go on unchaperoned walks, stay with each other, give each other books, without marriage,' Brooke once told to his friend.

In 1911 appeared Brooke first collection of verse, POEMS, and his work was featured in the periodical Georgian Poetry, edited by his friend, Sir Edward Marsh. Over the next twenty years, the book sold almost 100 000 copies. In 1911 Brooke was secretly engaged to Noel Olivier, five years his junior. The affair was for all participants frustrating and subsequently Brooke had an affair with the actress Cathleen Nesbitt. Overworked and emotionally empty, Brooke suffered a nervous breakdown. In the spring of 1912, Brooke and Ka Cox went to Germany, where he wrote 'The Old Vicarage, Grantchester', which is among his most admired poems."

Tyntesfield takes its name from the Tynte family, first recorded at the estate in 1404. In 1643, when the royalist MP Sir Robert Tynte died, his seat in Wraxall was described as 'the ancient house of his ancestors'. However, his descendants preferred their other Somerset seat, Chelvey Court, five miles to the south, and Tynte's Place declined in status to a let farmhouse

In 1813, it was acquired by John Penrose Seymour who owned the estate that lies to the east, Belmont. Seymour's heir, the Revd George Turner Seymour, commissioned Robert Newton of Nailsea to rebuild Tynte's Place as a small Gothic mansion between 1836-40.

Norton's second rebuilding

The architect William Gibbs commissioned for the rebuilding was John Norton. Mr Norton was London-based but born in Bristol, a connection that brought him several important commissions in the area.

Trained by Benjamin Ferrey, the friend and biographer of A. W. N. Pugin, Norton ran a large and profitable practice, with projects ranging from the Winter Gardens at Great Yarmouth to a castle in Estonia. He built numerous churches in a fluent Puginian Gothic, laced with the sortof Continental references that became fashionable in the 1850s.

Norton was first consulted about alterations to Tyntesfield in 1859, but his final plans date from the spring of 1863. Work was in progress from October of that year untilthe end of 1865, when the family moved back in time for Christmas. The contractors were William Cubitt & Co, who reconstructed the house from stone quarried on the estate. It is faced with Bath stone and its ornamental carving is by a Mr Beates, whose naturalistic motifs were copied from local plants.

That's a pretty good page that I didn't know of.
We should make it our long term goal to expand our prescence there.
We have the ambition to cover all of Scandinavia, but right now we're approximately 80% Swedish, 15 % Danish, 3 % Norwegian, 1 % Finnish, and we try to expand more in the languages where we have less.

We constantly fail to do this, as we add more in Swedish than in any other language.

In February, our first Finnish encyclopedia went online, and in March I just completed two more volumes of Salmonsens, as I can see you have noticed.

Right now, Norwegian feels like a priority with the 1905-2005 celebrations coming up, and in Danish Salmonsens would have priority over other works, as I'm sure you'll agree.

We're a volunteer project and have no budget, well almost. The fastest way to add to our collection is to scan a book and upload the scanned images to our website.
If you cannot scan, perhaps you can find the book and send it to us.

One good source of old Scandinavian books is http://www.antikvariat.net/. Of course, both alternatives are useless if copyright would stop us from publishing.

For scanning we use standard image file formats, predominantly TIFF G4 in 600 dpi.
For OCR we use ABBYY FineReader. For the rest, we write our own software.

There are some thinkers who are, from the very beginning, unambiguously identified as philosophers (e.g., Plato). There are others whose philosophical place is forever contested (e.g., Nietzsche); and there are those who have gradually won the right to be admitted into the philosophical fold. Simone de Beauvoir is one of these belatedly acknowledged philosophers. Identifying herself as an author rather than as a philosopher and calling herself the midwife of Sartre's existential ethics rather than a thinker in her own right, Beauvoir's place in philosophy has only recently been secured.

The Ethics of Ambiguity, puiblished in 1947, redeploys concepts of canonical philosophical figures. Here Beauvoir takes up the phenomenologies of Husserl and Hegel to provide an analysis of intersubjectivity that accepts the singularity of the existing individual without allowing that singularity to justify an epistemological solipsism, an existential isolationism, or an ethical egoism. The Hegel drawn on here is the Hegel who resolves the inequalities of the master slave relationship through the justice of mutual recognition. I studied at an ashram in London and was taught how to meditate using a mantra
I do not believe in any religion - hinduism or christianity - and both are mechanisms of social control for example.

But an effective method of entering a meditative state of mind is however a very useful tool to have in ones mental tool box., part of "know thyself".

The other point you make is that walking is an essential part of any program of self improvement,
but for the pathologically obese (double so called "ideal weight")
too much walking could damage joints and limbs.

Swimming three lenghs three times a week is a far better way to start because the water supports all the bodyweight, and when muscle tone has been improved then serious walking may begin.

About 30 minutes exercise at a comfortable rate three tiems a week
or 11 minutes a day in your own home doing 5 Basic eXercises

I still regard itas one of my most treasured posessions.

I replaced the running and star jumps by gentler walking or swimming

ONLY two or three reps at first (2 or 3 repetitions)

1 - sit ups - stomach muscles
2 - lie on stomach and arch back - back muscles
3 - push ups with knees bent at first - arm and shoulders muscles
4 - bending and stretching - touching the floor between ones feet

(I like to add twisting here too)

5 - aerobics for 5 minutes vigourously
or 20 to 30 minutes gently (the best in my opinion)

Isn't Theology mainly for practising Christians?

At Oxford we study Theology as an academic subject - that is, analytically and critically.
Arguments based solely on assertion or belief rarely prosper: a more solid base is needed. LOL the premises of it all cannot be proved

So although many do bring a lively faith to their studies, many do not: undergraduates come from a wide variety of religious backgrounds and none. the latter better watch out - making conversions is like collecting scalps - or being a Casanova of the souls

Those who come up as committed Christians sometimes fear that studying Theology may destroy their faith, but they usually find that the academic challenges provoke them to think further, and their conviction is deepened.
dangerous bed fellows - I had an affair with a lovely tall well shaped red haired theological student from Copenhagen University - we were greatly attracted to each other but the deep irrationality of her life - teaching confirmation candidates whilst living "normally" with beer and a decent sex life, as students do and should - in moderation of course - ruled her out as a candidate for Mrs Watkins the third -grin - still one eye open for number four - but I am neither rich nor thin enough to attract those I like. so I let things drift - sigh.

"One should never underestimate the ability of even the smallest members of the Procyonidae to resist manual restraint and inflict serious bodily injury.
As a result, manual restraint can not be adequately and safely employed for procedures such as blood sampling, ear tagging, and physical examination.
Rather, it should be reserved only for injection of medications and chemical restraint agents and if you are skilled and experienced enough, quick trap removals or cage relocations.
Protective gloves should be worn during attempts at manual restraint.
As added protection a butcher's chain-mail glove may be used as an insert in a welder's or monkey handling glove.

However, it should always be remembered that gloves decrease tactile sensitivity and may encourage an excessive pressure to be applied to maintain grip on the animal [12].

NEVER try to restrain any Procyonidae by picking them up by the scruff-of-the-neck.
The Procyon, Bassaricyon and Bassariscus generally have enough 'extra' skin to twist almost completely around, while Nasau and Potos flavus have insufficient skin to allow a good 'purchase'.

Bassaricyon, Bassariscus and Potos flavus may be captured with gloved hands by quickly and firmly grasping around the dorsolateral cervical area immediately caudal to the skull with one hand (avoid compressing the jugular groove and/or trachea), while restraining the legs and tail with the other hand.
An assistant is now able to give an injection in one of the extended rear legs. In the Nasau and Procyon, such restraint attempts are a daunting and dangerous under-taking because of their 'Houdini-like' ability to very aggressively resist restraint.

With lightening speed and agility they flex their limbs to the body, hunch up their necks and proceed to roll side-to-side and front to back into a ball, while emitting blood-curdling snorts, growls and screams and biting at anything within reach.
At this point the uninitiated handler usually drops his charge and bleeding profusely tries to escape, but frequently finds the animal had made a bee-line toward them in the hopes of gaining "the high ground" by climbing up their legs - old habits of climbing trees in defense die hard.

The background:

The tradition of running news servers at Freie Universitaet Berlin goes
back as far as 1989 (historic keyword: "Methan"). The news service was
open for external users ever since: Until 1992, there was no access
restriction at all (as usual at that time). Later, a basic access
management where IP numbers and domain names were added on request was
established.

Starting with the CIS project (a third-party funded project of DFN)
of ZEDAT of Freie Universitaet Berlin, the news service was expanded
by the feature of registration for individual users in the beginning
of the year 1998:

News.CIS.DFN.DE was born. (*)

After the CIS project was finished in mid 2002, the administrators kept

But when one builds with LEGO one does not have to put each brick on top of the previous one. Indeed, it is a main feature of LEGO that one can combine the bricks much more freely.

Why is this interesting?

Clearly nobody really needs to know exactly how many ways there are to combine 6 or more LEGOs, as clearly demonstrated by the fact that LEGO has done very nicely with the smaller number over several decades!

Thus this is mainly interesting as a challenge for mathematicians:
To compute or at least estimate the number of ways to combine a given number of two-by-four LEGO bricks.

Such challenges are always important to drive mathematical research, and it oftens happens that methods developed to study a problem with no practical applications (like this one) are useful to study problems which do have an impact on everyday life.

Mathematicians often get the question of whether there is anything left to study in mathematics.

The common misconception that the study of mathematics is somehow complete is probably induced by the fact that the mathematics most people encounter during their education is several centuries old.

The fact of the matter is that mathematics is a vivacious research area with lots of open problem, and here is a good one to point out.

I took a polygraph test as a condition of employment at a company when I lived in Texas.

The company did not allow anyone that smoked cigarettes. That's right, the owner was a vehement anti-smoker. The purpose of the lie detector was primarily to weed out people that smoked. I don't, didn't, and never did smoke, but it made no difference, I still had to sit down with electrodes attached to me while a guy asked questions.

The first thing that they do is to go over all the questions that you will be asked. They even give you a list of them to look at. This builds your confidence in the examiner, and it relaxes you--something that they call drawing a baseline of physiological responses. Second, the guy hooks up the wires to your chest, arm, and palm (breathing strain guage, heart rate monitor, and galvanic skin response). Then the examiner relaxes you for a while by asking you neutral, background questions such as the month of your birthday or your mother's maiden name.

This is how my polygraph test went. At first.

The examiner was a retired detective from the Dallas police department. He expressed surprise that I had never smoked; this was one of the official questions, on the list, one that I was aware was going to be asked while I was being recorded. About half-way through the interview, with the needles wiggling of course, he pulled out a pack of Marlboros and started smoking. I was astonished that he was trying to incite me into a nicotine attack or something even in the midst of a polygraph test whose express purpose was to determine if I smoked or not. The duplicity shocked me. And what is more, I recognized that someone who didn't smoke (like me) could react in an emotional way to the obvious trick of the examiner, rather than to the possibility of having been found lying by the machine, and it would be decided that I was a smoker. Not that I really cared for this crappy company, as single kid with no responsibilities whatever, but I thought of the person next in line with 4 kids to feed.

The questions continued after the examiner started to smoke with me in his office. I thought that this was pretty much the end of the line for me, so I sort of relaxed while he finished his smoke in my face and asked me questions about my mom's maiden name and my birthday. Next thing he does is he asks a question about whether I had falsified my employment application in any way. I think that this was their method to eliminate union organizers, who might hide their job history. I think federal law prevents companies from discriminating against union employees and hiring those that have belonged to unions, so the question was probably an end-around of the federal law. It didn't apply to me in any case, so I could answer the question truthfully--I wasn't an AFL-CIO field organizer. But what stunned me about this was that this was a new question, not at all on the list.

I was really cranked at the examiner, the retired Dallas cop. I called the company the next day to ask them how the polygraph went, expecting them to tell me to get lost, and they said to come in and start work. I was shocked again, because I glanced at the needle after the second trickey-poo of the retired lieutenant (something you aren't supposed to do; what the hell--he lied to me!) and saw that my GSR flew practically off the chart after a spike when he started smoking.

In psychology, the GSR is practically shunned as a physiological signal because of its wildly unpredictable responses. We used it, heart rate, and strain guages when I worked in the bio-psych lab at Berkeley. Everyone agreed that if our results hung on GSR, we were bogus. I guess guys have gone on to the gas chamber because of it, though. Too bad! Welcome to the USA.

I worked for a couple of days at the place, getting up at 4AM to be at work two hours later. I had two bosses, one I felt more comfortable with. I decided to ask the *other one* how the lie detector worked out. He said "OK, but there was some deception". I guess he thought that I'd deny it, but I just said, "Yes, there was." And that was it. He looked at me kind of surprised, and I just looked back at him. I did OK on the job, didn't smoke, and actually fixed a lot of stuff for them, leaving after a year or so for more pay and humane hours.

Another story, shorter: I knew a guy who lied through and through on a polygraph test and came out squeaky clean. What he did was to repeat to himself over and over "My mother's maiden name is Smith". That ruse gave him something to concentrate on, something monotonous, and he never lost baseline while they asked him if thought that labor unions were a good thing: "No" (flatline).

If I was on a jury, I'd never accept any polygraph evidence. How do you know what role the examiner played in generating the results?

Since 1979 our collection has grown to incliude 70 Draisinen and 50 heavier cars with crane and loading-area, traillers and other special railcars for the track-maintenance.

Deep Ocean Assessment and Reporting (DART) sensors use deep-sea pressure detectors that measure changes in water depth as a tsunami wave passes overhead.

The sensors then transfer the information to a surface buoy, which relays it to the monitoring stations by satellite. The DART system prevented a false alarm on Hawaii just a month after its activation, following a tremor in Alaska. DART is also less vulnerable to earthquake damage than tide gauges but experts insist that multiple detection systems are essential.

Officials from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii detected the seismic signal from the earthquake on 26 December but were unable to determine when or where a tsunami might strike. Only after hearing media reports that a tsunami had hit Sri Lanka were they able to alert Madagascar and the Mauritius Islands via the State Department in Washington, DC, US.

Phil McFadden chief scientist at Geoscience Australia, which has been commissioned by the Australian government to design an early warning system for the Indian Ocean, says it could consist of 30 seismographs to detect earthquakes, 10 tidal gauges and six DART buoys. He estimates that it would only cost around $20m to install these sensors.

ut installing a detection system is only one part of the challenge, says David Ovadia, head of British Geological Survey International in Nottingham, UK. He says it is also vital to have a reliable communications system and to educate people about what to do after the alarm is raised.
