from my blotter

a desk in the 1950ies always had a blotter
a piece of blotting paper in a holder because we wrote with dip or fountain pens and real ink - eg QUINK

so now I use a piece of very clean newsprint as a mouse mat I scribble stuff on it that I want to come back to.

Spider Myths: Ours are deadlier than yours

sometimes said to have the world's most toxic spider venom. I don't know what you would base such a judgment on. One authoritative source states that over 7,000 authentic cases of human bites from these spiders have been recorded, with only a handful of known deaths, and less than 7% of cases serious enough to need antivenom. So despite the surprisingly large number of bites, this spider is not exactly public enemy number one either.

copenhagen sleep-in - Google Search: "Copenhagen Sleep-in. Blegdamsvej 132, 2100-Copenhagen, Denmark" had 9268 guests from 89 countries in 2005

Post darwinism became important to me since I heard of Burgess Shale fossils

search4science: "Bjrn K. Pedersen, MD founder of search4science:
'Researchers have grown fed up with the chaotic information that reigns on the Internet, where many users seldom finding what they are looking for,' says Bjrn K. Pedersen, MD and founder of search4science.
'Our Darwinistic search method is the solution to this problem, since it offers more synonyms and supplementary words the more it is used. We have already applied for a patent for the technical solution.'"

Since January 2000, 35 researchers and students linked to the Oslo Research Park have been working on a new method of finding relevant information on the Internet. The result is search4science, an interactive and intelligent search service which, at the start, contained around 50,000 scientific words and expressions, and now contains over 220,000 scientific words and phrases.

Re: Intelligent Design and Academic Freedom

Math Forum Discussions

If the lawyers go too far, they'll make real science illegal, unless Church approved. We'll live in a neo-fascist state, wherein you must lick the boots of the God-fearing party apparatus, or kiss your funding good bye.

Fortunately, the secularly-minded IRS isn't subject to complete cave-in at the moment, and NSF, other government agencies, have ways to nurture science without setting up the kinds of religio-political litmus tests that would allow organized religion to prosecute its wars (against reason, against its various selves) to the bitter end.
